A hydrogen water bottle is a small electrolysis cell with a drinking vessel sitting on top of it, and everything interesting happens in the two inches at the bottom. Fill the clear chamber, twist it down onto the base and press the button once. For the next five or ten minutes a current runs through a pair of plates under the floor of the chamber, and hydrogen goes into the water.

No cartridge. No filter to replace. Nothing to reorder, ever.

You can watch the whole cycle happen

The chamber is clear polycarbonate and there is nothing inside it but water, so a ten minute cycle is something you stand and watch rather than something you take on trust. Bubbles lift off the disc in the floor in a fine column and climb the whole 5.4 inches of the tube. The water goes cloudy with them after a minute or so, and it is still going when the countdown reaches zero.

Most of this category is a sealed steel flask with every working part hidden inside it. You press a button, a light comes on somewhere, and that light is the only evidence you are ever given.

Where the cheap ones cut the corner

Split water with a current and you get hydrogen coming off one plate and oxygen coming off the other. The inexpensive way to build one of these is to leave both plates in the same chamber, which puts everything that comes off both of them straight back into the water you are about to drink.

This one runs a membrane between the two sides. The hydrogen dissolves into the water above it and the oxygen goes the other way, out through the base, and the plates themselves are platinum coated. That membrane is the single biggest difference between a bottle at this price and a bottle at a fifth of it.

A countdown, not a guess

The screen is an OLED panel set into the front of the base, white on black, and it is why this one is easy to live with. It carries a concentration reading, the battery, and a countdown for whichever cycle you started. A ten minute run reads 09:59 and works its way down to zero.

Two cycle lengths, one button. Five minutes for a glass in the morning, ten when you have the time. The battery is 1800 mAh and fills from a USB-C cable in about three and a half hours, which is one evening plugged in behind the kettle.

It makes hydrogen water and it does not do anything else

Worth being straight about what this is. It is not a filter. It does not purify water, it does not soften it and it takes nothing out, so whatever you pour in is what you drink and it wants water you would happily drink already. Anything from 34 to 131 F goes in. Nothing boiling.

The upkeep is one job every two to four weeks, and it is a rinse through with citric acid, more often if you live somewhere hard. Leave a little water in the chamber between uses so the membrane stays damp. That is the whole of the upkeep, and for the ten minutes it runs you can see exactly what it is doing.
