A small table lamp built as a robot, with a vintage studio microphone for its head and body and a miniature guitar in its hands. Switch it on and a warm LED inside the microphone glows through every slot of the polished silver grille. The little player then lights up the corner of a desk, a shelf or a bedside table.
It runs from a USB cable, so it plugs into a computer, a wall adapter or a power strip. It stands just 6.3 inches tall. Choose the guitar it plays: a black or a red electric, a white bass or a natural acoustic.
A sculpture with the light off, a lamp with it on
Most desk lamps disappear the moment you switch them off. This one keeps its character in daylight, because the microphone head is polished to a mirror shine and picks up the window, the books and everything else around it. Rows of slots run across the grille, split by a single bar with a small diamond badge, the way the old studio microphones were made.
The arms and legs are built from small bolts, hex nuts, washers and rings. The knees are hooked wire, and each foot ends in two black rubber-capped toes. One hand rests over the strings and the other holds the neck, and the joints can be adjusted to change the pose a little.
In the evening the light comes through the slots as warm stripes rather than a bare glare. That makes it a mood light on a shelf as much as a small lamp beside a laptop.
Four guitars, not four colors
The robot is the same on every style. The instrument is what changes.
Black Electric and Red Electric carry a six-string solid-body electric with a white pickguard and a small gold bridge, the classic stage guitar in two finishes. White Bass is a four-string bass with dark hardware and a cluster of black knobs, for anyone who would rather hold down the low end than play lead. Acoustic holds a pale natural-wood guitar with a round sound hole and a brown rosette, and it looks the warmest of the four when the lamp is lit.
Buying for someone who plays? Pick the instrument they actually own.
Small enough for the desk, the record shelf or the nightstand
At 6.3 inches tall and 3.1 inches deep, it fits beside a monitor, between records on a shelf, next to a turntable or on a narrow bedside table without crowding anything. The cable leaves from the back, so the front stays clean and the robot is all you see.
Anywhere with a USB port nearby will do, so a home office, a studio corner, a bar or a bedroom all work. For a guitarist, a bass player or anyone with a wall of vinyl, it is the kind of gift that stays on the desk long after the wrapping is gone.
