No dead screen on the nightstand. No blue glow across the ceiling. Nothing that looks like a gadget. Set the alarm once and forget it.

What it looks like for the other twenty-three hours

You read a bedside clock for about a minute a day. It sits there for the rest of it.

Most of them sit there as a black rectangle. The front of this one is a mirror, and a real one. On a pale marble top it goes silver. On a walnut desk it fills with brown and you can see the grain in it. In a dark room it goes almost black. The digits float on the surface of whatever it happens to be showing you.

So it takes the color of whatever room it stands in. It stops reading as a piece of electronics.

Big enough to read from the doorway

The numerals stand about half the height of the face and run most of the way across it. From the other side of the room, at an angle, half asleep, you still get the hour.

There are two brightness settings on the light button. Turn night mode on and the display drops to the lower one on its own between 6pm and 6am. The display that reads across a sunlit kitchen is not the one you want burning at three in the morning.

Snooze that isn't nine minutes

Nine minutes is a convention somebody else settled. You set this one, anywhere from five minutes to sixty.

Ten on a weekday, if ten is what actually gets you up. Half an hour on a Sunday. The button sits on the top edge, so you find it with a flat hand instead of hunting for it with your fingertips.

It wants a plug, and here is why that matters

This runs from the USB cable. Leave it connected and the display stays lit all day.

Three AAA cells go in the back, and they do one job. They hold the time and the alarm through a power cut, so a storm on Tuesday night does not cost you Wednesday morning. On the cells alone the screen sleeps ten seconds after you touch a button. That is there to save the batteries, not to run the clock.

The cable comes in the box. The plug for the end of it does not, and neither do the batteries. Most people already have both in a drawer. Sort those out once, set the alarm, and the thing on your nightstand goes back to being a mirror.
