A hook that still looks good with nothing on it

You know what a wall hook does, and the trouble is how it looks for the rest of the day. Most of the time a hook is empty, and an empty row of metal hooks by the door or the bed reads as hardware, a few sharp shapes sticking out of an otherwise calm wall.

These read as four small wooden objects instead. The faces are gently domed, the rims are rounded all the way round, and because every shape is different you can line them up in a neat row or scatter them at different heights and both look deliberate. Hang a tote on one and leave the other three bare.

The wide cap keeps the strap where you put it

A strap or a loop drops over the cap and settles on the round post behind it, where the wider pebble in front holds it back from sliding off the end. That makes them good for the things that live by a door or a bed: a canvas bag, a scarf, a cap, a light jacket by its loop, a dog leash, a hand towel or a set of headphones.

Each hook stands about one and a half inches off the wall, the teardrop a little less, which is enough for a bag handle and slim enough that nobody catches a shoulder on it in a narrow hallway.

Screw them up, or stick them on

Each set comes with two ways to mount it. The screws and wall anchors give the firmer hold, about 11 pounds, and need one small hole per hook. The drill-free adhesive holds about 6.6 pounds, so it suits lighter things and walls you would rather not drill.

Once a hook is up, nothing shows on the wall but the wood: no plate, no screw head and no bracket.

Walnut or beech

Walnut is a warm mid brown with darker grain lines that run in loose rings across each face, so no two pebbles look the same, and it sits well against a white, gray or deep green wall. Beech is a pale, warm, almost peach-toned wood with a fine close grain and tiny flecks, softer and lighter, for a white wall or a light Scandinavian-style room. Both have a smooth matte lacquer finish that keeps the grain in view rather than under a shine.

Care

Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Keep liquid cleaners, abrasive pads and harsh chemicals off the wood, so the matte lacquer stays as it is.

Keep the hooks out of direct moisture and steamy, humid spots to protect the finish over time.
