A pocket door slides away into the wall, which is the whole point of it and also the reason it almost never locks. There is nowhere to hang a lever and nowhere to sink a cylinder, so most of them get a finger hole with no mechanism behind it. The bathroom door stays open.

No lever. No knob. Nothing standing out from the face of the door. Turn the bar with one finger and the hook is out.

The door still looks like a door

From across the room there is one slim oval on the face, about a hand-span tall, sitting almost flat against the timber. Nothing projects. Nothing throws a shadow.

That matters more on a sliding door than anywhere else in the house. Anything standing proud of the face has to clear the frame on every single pass, and a door you have to nurse past its own hardware is a door that ends up propped open. In a wall pocket it stops being a preference at all, because the door has to travel into the wall and a lever cannot follow it.

Everything that does the work is in the door edge

Slide the door open and the edge tells you the rest. A slim plate runs down it, screwed top and bottom, with two openings cut into it.

The upper one holds the hook bolt, a flat wedge that swings out of the plate and hooks downward into the frame. A sliding door needs that shape, because an ordinary sprung latch has nothing to push against on a door that moves sideways rather than swinging. The lower opening is the edge pull. Press it and a small bar springs out to be gripped, so a door that has run its full travel into the wall can still be brought back. Let go and a spring returns it flush with the edge, so nothing is left standing out to catch the frame.

It locks for privacy, and it opens with a coin

The disc at the bottom of the pull is the control. On the inside face it carries a flat bar, and a quarter turn throws the hook. On the outside face the same disc carries a narrow slot, and a coin turns it from there.

So the door locks from inside and opens from the landing, which is exactly what you want on a bathroom with a small child behind it. There is no key and no cylinder anywhere on it. This is a lock for the doors inside a house — a bathroom, a bedroom, an office off the hall — and a front door needs something else entirely.

Measure the thickness of your door first

The body is mortised into the door rather than screwed onto the surface, so the door has to be thick enough to take it. It fits doors from 1-9/16 to 1-31/32 inches thick, which is 40 to 50 millimeters, and outside that range in either direction it will not go in. Sliding doors, pocket doors, barn doors and folding doors all take it, provided the leaf falls inside those two figures.

Put a tape across the edge of yours before you order, because it takes ten seconds and it is the single number that decides whether this one fits. Get it right, pick the finish against whatever else is already on the doors, and the room ends up with a lock nobody notices until the moment they need it.
