A flat face that reads as a pumpkin, lit or switched off

Each one is a flat shape about 2 inches across, cut in the outline of a round pumpkin with ribs marked down its face. Being flat, it shows you the whole face at once instead of turning a curved side toward you.

After dark the orange shell glows around the openings, and the eyes, nose and grin show through as clean shapes. In daylight the bright orange still reads as a row of jack-o'-lanterns, so the string looks like decoration from the first of October, not a coil of wire waiting for evening.

The size helps too. Big enough to read from the far side of a room or a yard, small enough that 20 of them along a bookshelf or a fence still look like one tidy line.

Battery or solar, and how many to pick

The battery version runs on a clear wire from a clear box that takes AA batteries, with a switch on top. Tuck the box behind a vase or a stack of books and it goes anywhere indoors, with no outlet to plan around. It is made for indoors only, so keep it out of the rain and off the porch. It comes in 10 or 20 lights.

The solar version runs on a dark green wire that disappears into ivy, a hedge or a planter. Its square solar panel sits on a stake that pushes into the lawn or a bed, wherever it catches daylight. It comes in 20 or 30 lights, and nothing runs back to the house.

Ten is right for a mantel, a doorframe or the middle of a table. Twenty covers a window, a banister or, on the solar version, a porch rail, and thirty will take a run of fence or the edge of a garden bed without looking sparse.
