The toilet brush is usually the last thing anyone chooses for a bathroom, so it tends to be whatever came from the supermarket. This one stands beside the toilet like a small fluted pot. The brush head sits down inside it, out of sight.

The holder's walls are opaque ceramic all the way around, and the bristle head drops below the rim when the brush goes back in. From across the room you see a ribbed holder and a straight black handle. Nothing else. The ribs run vertically and close together, each crest rubbed lighter than the groove beside it, so they catch the light and give the holder a texture you notice before you notice what it is for.

It needs no fixing. Set it in the corner, or in the narrow gap between the toilet and the wall, on tile, vinyl, stone or a sealed wood floor. Nothing gets drilled, and nothing is left behind if you move it.

Charcoal or Copper

The set is the same in both, so the finish is the only decision. Match it to your faucets and towel bar rather than to the tile. Charcoal is a deep, dark gray with silvery ridges. It looks at home beside matte black faucets, a black shower frame or dark grout, and gives a pale gray-and-white bathroom one deliberate dark shape in the corner.

Copper is a warm reddish brown with pale gold ridges and a soft, low sheen. It suits brass or bronze fittings, warm wood and cream or beige tile, the kind of room where cool gray accessories always look slightly off. The ribs are on the outside, where nothing wet touches them

A ribbed surface sounds like hard work to keep clean, but the fluting is on the outer wall of the holder and the brush never touches it. Dust settles in the grooves the way it settles on a baseboard, and a damp cloth run down them takes it off. The inside is a separate and quicker job. It needs a rinse every couple of weeks, nothing more.

Care

Wipe the outside with a damp cloth, running it down the grooves, whenever you clean the bathroom. Every couple of weeks, tip the holder out, add hot water and a splash of cleaner, swirl, rinse and dry it.

Let the brush drip over the bowl before it goes back in. Do not leave neat bleach standing in the base, keep scouring pads off the glaze, and keep it out of a wet shower.
