The size is a decision you make on the morning

Every other bag you own was sized once, in a factory, by somebody who had no idea what your Thursday looks like. So you carry a thirty liter pack with a sandwich in it, or you carry a small one and hold your coat.

This one has no lid and no zip across the top. The mouth is a plain open tube, and you fold it forward on itself and pull one webbing strap down over the roll. Fold it three times and the bag is short, flat and close to your back. Nothing inside has room left to slide around. Fold it once and it stands tall enough for a change of clothes, a pair of shoes and everything you were already carrying, which is the difference between a commute bag and a bag you can take away for a night.

Two straps on each side pull the sides in when the bag is light, so a small load rides as a small bag.

The port on the side needs your power bank

There is a USB socket set into the right hand side of the bag, high up, just under the roll. It runs a short lead to the inside, and that is all it does.

Read that literally, because it matters. The bag holds no battery and stores no charge. You put your own power bank in the pocket inside, plug it into the lead, and then a phone on the outside charges without opening anything or unrolling anything. Nothing at all comes out of that socket until you put something in.

Rain, and what the coating really does

The shell is Oxford fabric with a smooth coated face, and water beads on it and runs off. A rolled top is genuinely good in weather, because the closure is three folds of fabric pressed together rather than a zip line sitting open to the sky.

It is not a dry bag though. There is no taped seam, no roll clip at each end, and no rain cover in the box. Stitch lines and the socket in the side are where a long soak eventually finds a way through, so this is a bag for a wet walk to the station rather than a day in the hills under cloud.

A laptop, and a suitcase handle

A padded compartment inside takes a laptop up to 15.6 inches, and it sits against the back panel rather than loose in the middle where the corners find your spine. In front of it the main compartment is one open space, with a slot pocket, a phone pocket and a zipped pocket down the side for the small flat things.

The back panel is quilted open mesh with a band of shell fabric running across it, and that band slides straight over the telescopic handle of a suitcase. On the outside there is one long zipped pocket down the front, and an open slip pocket on each side under the compression straps. Pack it once and the bag stops being a decision you make twice a day.
