A rustic Nordic wall clock made from a round of pale rubberwood, with all twelve numbers engraved straight into the face and the hands in a dark walnut brown. The movement is silent, so it can hang over a bed, a desk or a reading chair, and the only time you notice it is when you look up for the time.

No ticking. No glass. No printed dial to fade or peel.

Numbers cut into the wood, not printed on it

Printed numbers sit on top of a face, and a print is the first thing to scuff, fade or lift at the edges. These are cut into the rubberwood itself, in a fine, plain typeface, and the inside of each cut is darkened so the numbers read clearly from across the room while the grain carries on around them.

The face is made from long, straight-grained boards joined edge to edge, so the grain runs unbroken from top to bottom instead of breaking into the short zigzag joints of a finger-jointed panel. The edge is rounded over all the way round. At 0.8 inches thick it sits close to the wall with a soft shadow under it, and a keyhole slot in the back means it hangs on a single nail.

Straight hands for a quiet wall, twig hands for a bit of character

Straight Hands is the plainer of the two. Slim, leaf-shaped hour and minute hands in walnut brown point at the time, and a thin second hand in the same shade moves round with them without a sound. It suits a study, a kitchen or a hallway, anywhere you want a simple clock that still looks warm.

Twig Hands keeps the same face and swaps in hour and minute hands shaped like small branches, knots and all, with a little green sprout at the center where they meet. It has more character than the straight pair, and it looks at home beside plants, linen, oak and pale plaster.

Both styles come in two sizes. Small, at 9.8 inches across, fits above a desk, beside a doorway or over a kitchen counter, while Large, at 11.8 inches, has the presence for the wall above a sofa, a sideboard or a bed. Each runs on one AA battery, sold separately.

One nail and one battery, and the wall keeps the time without a sound.
