Each cane is a glossy red tube wound with milky white stripes, so in daylight it reads as a classic candy cane standing in the flower bed. Inside the tube, a line of small warm white LEDs runs up the shaft and round the hook. When they come on, the red and the white both glow from within, rather than shining out like bare bulbs.

The finishing touch is at the end of every hook. A white cap closes the tip, and a small faceted star hangs from it on a fine clear line, catching the light just below the curve. Along a row, the stars line up at the same height and give the whole path a neat, deliberate look. Every hook curls the same way, so the row reads as one set rather than a scatter of odd decorations.

The sun does the charging, and the cord stays off the grass

The canes are joined at ground level by one thin clear wire, which runs on to a small square solar panel on its own stake. Because the panel is separate, you can put it wherever the light is best, out from under a shrub or the porch roof. The canes stay exactly where they look right. A battery comes with the set, so there is nothing extra to buy before the first evening.
