A string of small clear stars on a fine clear wire, each one lit from its center by a warm white LED. It runs from a battery box, so it hangs wherever there is something to hang it from rather than wherever the outlet happens to be. Loop it along a bookshelf, across the wall above the bed or down the side of a window, and the corner you sit in at night gets a low, warm glow.

No plug to find. No cord taped along the baseboard. No bright overhead light at ten at night.

A star spreads its light where a bare bulb just glares

Most fairy lights are a row of bare points, bright to look straight at and lost the moment you look away. Here every LED sits at the center of a flat plastic star. Its face is covered in small raised dots, laid in rows along each arm, with a beaded border running round the outline. The light runs out into those dots, so each one glows as a whole star shape rather than as a pinpoint you end up squinting at.

Switched off, the stars read as clear frosted plastic, and the twisted wire between them is transparent. A string left up through the day looks light and tidy against a pale wall or a bookcase. In the evening the wire all but disappears, so only the stars show.

Three AA batteries, and it goes anywhere indoors

The string runs from a small battery box that takes three AA batteries, not included. That means it works in all the places a plug never reaches: the top of a wardrobe, the rail of a headboard, a shelf halfway up a wall, the frame of a mirror in the hall. It switches on and off. The light stays steady, with no flashing modes to click through on the way to the one you wanted.

Tuck the box behind a row of books, over the back of a frame or behind the curtain, and nothing in the picture gives away where the power comes from. The string is made for indoor use only.

Four lengths, from one shelf to a whole wall

The 5 ft string carries ten stars and suits a single shelf, a mirror or a large glass jar on a side table. The 10 ft, with twenty, runs across a headboard or along a mantel, while the 20 ft and its forty stars will follow a curtain pole and fall down both sides of the window. The 33 ft carries eighty, enough to swag across a whole wall or wind up through a tall plant.

Hang it once, switch it on as the light goes, and the room has a softer light to sit in for the rest of the evening.
