Starburst ornaments break up a tree full of round baubles. Each one is a burst of fine spikes radiating from a small center, so it reads as a point of light even on the branches where the bulbs are hidden, and it hangs from its own top point like a star caught in the needles.

Choose champagne or white glitter in a small or a large size, or a clear star with sharp faceted points. They come in sets of four, six or eight, so there are enough to carry the look around the whole tree.

Three different stars, not one star in three sizes

The small star is a dense burst of thin, glitter-coated rods, all close to the same length, so it looks round and full from every side of the tree. At 3.9 in tall it tucks in between the baubles on any branch.

The large star is the statement piece. At 5.9 in it has fewer, thicker spikes that taper to sharp points, with one long spike straight up and one straight down, so it hangs with a clear vertical line, the classic shape of a Christmas star. A few near the top of the tree, or one in each window, do a lot of work.

The clear star is molded from transparent plastic into faceted points: four long ones like a compass, with shorter points packed between them. It has no glitter at all. It picks up the tree lights along its edges instead, it stands 3.7 in tall, and it comes in one size.

Champagne is a soft, muted gold glitter, a shade deeper on the small burst than on the large star. White is a fine icy white that stands out best against a dark green tree.

Enough of them to look planned

One star on a tree looks like it landed there by accident. Four make a cluster for a small tree or a garland, six spread across a standard tree, and eight let you work them in at every level. Two sizes in the same color hang well together, with the large stars higher up and the small bursts filling the gaps further down.

They are just as useful away from the tree. Hang a few from a pine garland along the mantel, from bare branches in a tall vase, or in a window, where the white and clear stars catch the daylight. Each one is light, about 0.35 oz for the small burst and 1.2 oz for the large star, and the tree finally has something on it that is not round.
