Three wooden coasters that open into stars under a mug or a teapot, then fold back onto their own stand as a small wooden tree. Put away, the set is something you would happily leave on the table anyway, so the coasters are always right where the cups are.
Coasters tend to live in a drawer across the room, which means the one you want is never beside you when the coffee arrives. These wait on the tree between drinks, an arm's reach from where you sit, and the table looks finished whether they are in use or not.
Put away, the set stands on the table as a tree
The stand is a turned wooden post on a round wooden base. Each coaster is a ring of leaf-shaped wooden slats linked together near one end. On the post the three rings hang one above the other, so the leaves fall in three layers and the whole thing reads as a small fir tree just under nine inches tall. Lift the top ring off the post and you have a coaster in your hand. Drop it back on and the tree is whole again.
It comes in two wood tones. Walnut is a warm dark brown with an open, wavy grain that sits well beside darker furniture, leather and books. Natural is a pale honey color with fine flecks in the grain, and the easier fit in a light kitchen or next to white oak.
Open, each one takes a mug, a teapot or a small pot
Set a ring down and spread the leaves, and they lie flat on the table as a star whose points reach well past the base of a mug. The cup stands in the middle where the leaves meet, and the wood keeps the heat of a fresh coffee or a just-filled teapot off the tabletop.
That makes them useful for more than drinks. A pot of tea in the middle of the table, a small lidded pot from the stove or a sugar bowl all sit comfortably on one, and with three in the set there is a coaster for each of two cups and one left over for the pot. Cold glasses are fine on them too. The faces are polished smooth with the grain left visible, so a cup sits level and the wood still looks like wood.
One object on the table instead of a pile of coasters
A plain set of round coasters does one job and then needs somewhere to go, usually a holder that is just one more thing on the table. Here the stand is the holder and the holder is the decoration, so there is nothing to tidy around. The cup touches nothing but wood, with no cork backing to peel away, no felt to collect crumbs and no printed pattern to wear through.
When the last cup is cleared, the leaves fold together, the rings go back on the post, and a small wooden tree stands where the coasters were.
