A camping hammock with the bug net built into it, at 595 grams and packed down to the size of a dinner plate. That is one and a third pounds, and it sits in the top of a day pack without pushing anything else out. You stop having to decide whether it is worth taking.

No tent. No poles. No pegs. What the ground is like where you stop no longer matters, and dusk is no longer the moment you have to go inside.

The net stands up on its own, so nothing lies on your face

Most hammock nets are a loose bag of mesh that settles onto whoever is underneath, which is bearable until you turn over. Two thin arch bars run across the width of this one and spring the mesh up off you, so the whole length of it holds open like a small tent and the air keeps moving through it. A zip runs down the long edge. You get in, pull it shut behind you, and everything with wings stays on the other side of it.

The net is sewn in rather than removable, and that is a deliberate trade. On a still, cold night with nothing biting, you flip the whole thing under the bed and lie in open air instead.

595 grams, and it rolls down to the size of a dinner plate

That is one and a third pounds. It is also the number that decides whether a hammock lives in the trunk of the car or comes up a hill on your back, and it is why this one is worth having over the heavy kind. Packed, it is a soft round bundle in its own drawstring sack, and it drops into a day pack without you rearranging anything else.

The 70D parachute nylon is what buys that. It is thin and breathable, it resists tearing, and the seams are reinforced where the load actually goes, so the weight comes off the fabric rather than off the strength. It still takes 200 kilos, or 441 pounds, which is two adults sharing or one adult who would rather not think about it.

What the cheap one gets wrong

The budget version is the same idea with the corners cut, and you find each one in the dark. Its net is a separate sleeve you thread over the top and fight with by headtorch. Its hanging kit is a length of cord you have to know a knot for, rather than flat webbing with a sewn loop and a carabiner that takes ten seconds a tree.

The straps, the carabiners and the sack all arrive with it, in the one bag. Set it up in a pine wood, between two fence posts at the end of the garden, or on a stand you already own, and the only real decision left is which two trees.
