A carton with no handles has to be carried in a bear hug, out in front of you, where you cannot see your feet and cannot see the step. Here a slot with rounded ends is die cut through each short panel, high up and wide enough for four fingers, so the weight hangs off your hands and the box rides against your body instead of balancing on your forearms.

It changes the small things too. You can pull one down off a shelf above your head. You can set one on a stack without trapping your fingers underneath it. Two people can carry the heavy one between them, one at each end, which is the only sensible way to move a box of tools.

Twenty boxes that take up almost no room until you need them

They arrive folded flat and banded together, a bundle roughly two thirds the height of one made-up box, which slides behind a door or on top of a wardrobe and waits there. Nobody has room for twenty made-up cartons in an apartment, and nobody wants to be ordering more boxes halfway through a Saturday with the van already booked. Fold up as many as the job needs and leave the rest in the stack.

The size is the reason they are worth keeping afterwards. At 19.7 by 11.8 by 11.8 inches a box is big enough to be worth filling and small enough that a full one stays liftable, and because every one of them is identical they stack square on a garage shelf instead of leaning. Winter coats, Christmas decorations, the paperwork you are legally required to keep and will never read again.

Everybody tries the supermarket route first. What you get is eleven boxes in nine different sizes, half of them slit open down the seam, several of them slightly damp from the chiller aisle, and not one with anywhere to hold. They will not stack, so the van gets loaded in a jumble and something gets crushed. You spend the evening driving instead of packing.
