Every house has one chair doing all the work

There is one seat in the room that gets used and the rest are furniture, and everybody knows which one theirs is. It takes the evenings, the naps, the tea balanced on the arm and the dog who gets up there the moment nobody is looking. Ten years of that shows in the same three places every time: a shine across the seat, dark patches where your forearms sit, and a headrest gone a different color from the chair.

Everyone tries a throw blanket first

A blanket is the obvious answer and it fails for one dull reason: a chair is not a rectangle. You spread it out, it sits square for about a minute, and then it slides off the arm, rucks up behind your back and finishes on the floor by the end of a movie. This one is cut to the shape of the job instead. A single long panel runs over the top of the backrest, down the front of it, across the seat and on down the front face, and it is long enough to follow your feet over the footrest when you put the chair back. Where the cheap ones cut the corner

Look at the edge and the thickness, because that is where the money goes. Plenty of covers in this category are one thin layer with the quilting pressed in rather than sewn, so they hang like a bedsheet and start fraying at a corner inside a month.

This one has real padding through it and a grid of small squares stitched through all three layers, each square puffed, with a tight four-lobed knot pulled in at every crossing point. The face is a short matte pile with the softness of velvet and none of the shine, and the back is plain woven cloth. Sizes go by seats, so count the seats and measure across the seating rather than across the whole sofa.
