A crystal ball that glows from the inside, with a Halloween figure perched on top of it or wrapped around it and a sculpted base underneath. There are seven to choose from, from a white ghost in a witch's hat to a black crow with its wings spread wide. Each one sits on a ball lit purple, green or amber by a built-in LED.

The light is inside the ball, behind the artwork

Every ball carries a dark scene on its surface: bare, twisting branches and bats in flight, with a row of headstones under the trees on the Owl and small pale ghosts drifting between them on the Black Ghost. When the LED is on, the ball fills with color and that artwork stands out against it in silhouette, the way branches look against a bright sky just after sunset.

On the Ghost, the pale, frosted figure sits right on top of the ball and catches its purple light. The whole piece reads as lit, not only the part at the bottom. The Crow's wings and the Owl's wing tips pick up a little of the color too.

The base gets as much attention as the figure. The Ghost's is a dark bronze tone, ringed with small pumpkins, a crescent moon, stars and curling vines. The others carry their own mix of jack-o'-lanterns, moons, stars, bats and bones, so there is still plenty of detail to look at in daylight.

Which figure to pick

Crow, Claw and Black Ghost are the darkest of the seven. The Crow spreads black wings over a purple ball, and the Claw is a black, taloned hand curling around one. The Black Ghost is a hooded figure in black with two green eyes, holding the ball in front of it. They look at home on a dark wood shelf, in a study or beside a bar.

Ghost, Owl and Cat are lighter in mood. The Ghost wears a witch's hat over a frosted white body. The Owl is white, with a small witch's hat of its own and an amber ball, and the Cat is black, with bat wings and bright orange eyes, on a green ball. The Witch sits between the two groups: a green-faced figure in a tall black hat and robes, hands raised over a green ball, with little potion bottles around her base.

Sized for a shelf, a mantel or the middle of the table

The Ghost stands about 8.3 inches tall and 3.5 inches wide, a little shorter than a hardback book, so it fits on a bookshelf or the end of a mantel without crowding whatever else is there. It works just as well on an entryway table or in the middle of the dinner table on the night of a party.

Made in resin as seasonal decoration for indoors, it looks its best where the room is a little dim around it. Stand one at each end of the mantel, or give the Crow a shelf of its own, and the glow sets the mood for every evening of the season.
