A coffee scale about the size of a coaster that weighs to a tenth of a gram and runs a timer beside the weight, so the dose, the water and the seconds all sit on one display while you brew. It has three modes, one for pour-over, one for espresso and one for everything else, and the first two do most of the work for you.
No stopwatch on your phone. No sums for the ratio. No guessing when the shot began. Set the cup down and brew.
Pour-over mode works out the ratio for you
You already know a scale weighs things. What makes a pour-over repeatable is the ratio of coffee to water and how long the pour takes, and keeping track of both with a kitchen scale and a phone means doing arithmetic with a hot kettle in your hand.
In pour-over mode you set the dripper and server on the scale, tap the power key to zero it, add your coffee and tap the timer key to record the dose. Then start pouring, and the scale times the pour and weighs the water by itself. When you lift the dripper away, the display takes turns showing the time with the water weight, then the brew ratio with the dose, so 15 grams of coffee and 225 grams of water reads as 1:15.
Note the numbers from a cup you liked, and tomorrow's cup can be the same one.
Espresso mode starts the timer on the first drop
Timing a shot by hand usually means starting a stopwatch when you press the button, a few seconds before any coffee arrives. In espresso mode the scale zeroes itself when you set the cup down, starts timing when liquid actually begins to land, and stops when the dripping stops or you lift the cup away. You get the real weight of the shot and its real time, side by side.
At 3.5 by 3.7 inches and under an inch thin, it is small enough to sit on an espresso machine's drip tray, right under the spouts, with the cup on top.
A regular mode for everything else, and a battery you charge by USB-C
Regular mode is a plain scale with a timer. Tap the power key to zero it, tap the timer key to start or pause, and hold it to clear. It is the one you use to weigh beans before grinding, a portafilter of grounds, or anything else up to 2 kilograms.
The battery is built in, a 700 mAh lithium cell that runs for about ten hours and charges through a USB-C port on the side, under a rubber cover. A slide switch beside the port has three positions, off, on, and on with sound, so the beeps are your choice. Left alone, it switches itself off after two minutes.
The silicone mat on top lifts off, and it is waterproof and non-slip, so a spill wipes away and the cup stays where you put it. Black is matte black all over. White is a frosted white body with a gray mat, and on both the display stays hidden in the surface until it lights.
