A backpack with a sealed compression chamber built into its base, and a small electric pump that draws the air back out once your clothes are inside. Three days of clothes go in loose and come back out flat, in a shell 16.5 inches tall.
No rolling. No kneeling on the lid. No separate vacuum sacks, and nothing to plug into the wall.
Where the air actually goes
Open the bag and it lies flat, both halves on the bed, lined in pale grey. The whole base half is one black chamber with its own airtight zip running across the top of it and a grey valve set near the corner. Clothes go in, the zip closes, the valve cap flips back, and the pump's nozzle pushes into the hole underneath.
Then you hold the button. The chamber pulls itself down around what you packed and the pile stops being a pile. A one way valve holds it there, so the bag stays flat until you decide otherwise.
The zip is stiff, and it is meant to be
A zip you can run with one finger is a zip that lets air past, so this one does not run with one finger. You tug the ring with one hand and walk the slider along with the other, and the first two or three times it feels like something is wrong. Nothing is wrong. That resistance is the seal, and a bag that opened easily would go soft again in the taxi.
Why not a bag and a packet of vacuum sacks
The usual answer to this problem is a set of sacks and the vacuum cleaner in the hall cupboard, and it works beautifully in exactly one direction. There is no vacuum cleaner in a hotel room. So the clothes you squashed flat on Monday come home loose and take twice the room they went out in, which is when the case stops closing.
Here the chamber is sewn into the bag and the pump travels with it, charged, in a side pocket. The way home packs like the way out. The pump takes the USB cable in the box, and there is no plug in the box, so it charges off whatever you already carry.
What it is like once it is on your back
The back panel is black spacer mesh over shaped foam, cut into two broad chevrons that stand the bag a few millimeters off your shirt and let air climb up the middle. The straps are padded and mesh faced, the chest strap slides to wherever it sits comfortably, and a flat webbing band across the back drops straight over a suitcase handle.
A 15.6 inch laptop has its own compartment. The two side pockets are gathered on elastic rather than stitched flat, so they hold a bottle without the bottle stretching them out of shape, and they close back down around a folded umbrella or the pump. It goes out packed and comes home the same size, which was the whole point.
