A clear disc a little smaller than a CD, with a solar panel on top and its lights facing down into the water. Float a few on the pool and leave them there, and once the light fades in the evening each one switches itself on and throws a ring of color across the water and the pool floor below it.
No wiring back to the house. No outlet by the water. No switch to remember at dusk.
It runs on the afternoon it has just had
A light sensor inside each disc keeps an eye on the sky. While daylight falls on the panel it stays dark and charges, and when the light around it drops below 50 lux, the dim end of dusk, it comes on by itself. Nobody walks out to the pool to start it.
Give it a full day of direct sun before the first evening, and after that five or six hours of direct sun a day keeps it going. Keep it clear of porch lights and pool lamps, though. A bright light close by tells the sensor it is still daytime, and the disc will sit there waiting for a dark that never arrives.
Nine colors, three fades and a remote you use from the deck
The remote picks the color: red, green, blue, yellow, orange, purple, pink, light blue or white. Three fade settings cycle through seven colors each, for the nights you would rather it changed on its own. Brightness steps between 30, 60 and 100 percent, so the same lights can sit at a soft glow behind dinner on the terrace and turn up full when friends come over.
There is a timer as well. Press 4H, 6H or 8H and the lights go off after that many hours, so the pool is dark again by the time you turn in rather than glowing through the small hours. Press the same button again to cancel it. All of it happens from the edge of the pool, and the lights stay exactly where they are floating.
One for a pond, eight for a long pool
Each disc lights its own patch of water, so the number you want follows the size of the water you have. A single light suits a small pond or a water feature beside the patio. Four spread across a backyard pool give it color from end to end, and eight make the whole surface glow. The single light comes with its own remote, and the larger packs come with one remote for every two lights.
Made to stay in the water all season
Each light is rated IP67, sealed against dust and protected against being submerged to about three feet for half an hour. Floating on the surface asks far less of it than that, so rain and splashes are no reason to fish the lights out. There is nothing to install and no tool to find. Set each one on the water with the panel facing up and the lights facing down, and that is the job done.
Chlorine and salt are the only real upkeep. A rinse in fresh water now and then, and a wipe across the panel, keep it charging well, and on a run of sunny days the pool lights up every evening without you giving it a thought.

Care
Rinse each light in fresh water after use in a chlorinated pool or in saltwater, and let it dry before you store it. Wipe the body and the solar panel with a soft, damp cloth from time to time to keep it charging well.
For long breaks, store the lights indoors to look after the battery. Do not take a light apart, because the waterproof seal only works while the light stays in one piece.
