A shelf you can see straight through

Most shelves over a roll are a slab of wood or steel, and in a small bathroom that block above the paper is one more bulky shape on the wall. This one is clear acrylic. The tile or paint behind it carries on through, and the fluted top catches the light along every ridge instead of sitting there as a dark band.

There is room on it for a phone, a reed diffuser or a small bottle. The shelf is fixed to a small metal bracket tucked under its back edge, and the two screw heads that hold it show faintly through the acrylic at the back.

Gold for warm stone, silver for chrome

Gold is a soft, warm satin gold that looks right against beige marble, cream tile and brass or gold taps. Silver is a satin silver that sits quietly beside chrome or stainless fittings, white tile and darker walls, where gold would stand out more than you want.

Either way the shelf stays clear. The finish you choose shows only in the arm and the bracket under it.

The roll goes on from the open end

The arm leaves the wall under the left side of the shelf, comes forward and runs along beneath the roll, and at the right-hand end it simply turns up and stops. There is no spring-loaded rod to squeeze and no end cap to unscrew. Changing the roll means sliding the empty tube off and pushing a full one on.

The holder stands 3.9 inches out from the wall and fixes to it through that bracket. Screws or mounting adhesive are not in the box, so you can use whichever suits your wall. Once it is up, the paper and whatever you carried in with you finally share one tidy spot.
