The flap is the look, and the zip underneath is why you can live with it

Bags that fold a flap over the top usually make you pay for it at the ticket barrier, with the thing you need buried under a drawstring and two buckles. This one closes with a coil zip across the full width of the top, two sliders meeting in the middle. The flap drops over it and snaps down at its bottom corners. Thumb the studs and lift. That is the whole operation.

Everything you reach for repeatedly stays outside it. A zip runs down the right of the front panel for a wallet, a phone and a passport. Each side carries a small pocket under a snap flap, deep enough to stand a water bottle in. The orange tab is there so your hand finds that zip without looking.

A shower beads up and runs off, and a downpour is a different question

The outer is a PU coated fabric with a fine embossed grid pressed into it, and rain stands on that surface in separate beads and runs straight off instead of soaking into the weave. That covers the walk from the car park, the wait on a platform and the dash from a taxi, which is most of what a commuter bag ever meets.

It is not waterproof, and it is worth being plain about why. A cable port is moulded straight through one side panel, and the front pocket zip is plain rather than sealed. A long soak finds its way in through both. Out in it for an hour, give the laptop a sleeve of its own.

It rides on the suitcase

A band of webbing runs across the middle of the back panel, open at both ends. Drop it over the extended handle of a wheeled case and the backpack sits on top and travels with it. Cross a terminal that way and you reach the gate with both hands free and nothing digging into a shoulder. It is a strip of tape and a line of stitching. You will use it on every trip you take.

The two ports, and what each one actually does

High on one side panel sits a small moulded rubber badge with a cross shaped slit through it. An earphone lead pushes out through the slit from inside, so the cable runs from your pocket to your ears with the flap shut.

The USB socket is the one worth being plain about. It is a port on the outside wired to a short lead inside, and there is no battery anywhere in this bag. Your own power bank goes in the main compartment and plugs into that lead. After that you charge a phone from the outside of a closed bag instead of unzipping it on a train. Leave the power bank at home and the socket does nothing at all. Packed for a Monday it takes a laptop, a charger, lunch and a bottle, and it still reads as a bag somebody chose rather than one they were issued.
