The pocket you are sitting against

Your passport and your wallet go into a flat compartment on the back panel, and once the bag is on your shoulders that panel is pressed against your spine, where a zip is not something anybody is opening in a crowd. It is the one pocket you cannot get into yourself while you are wearing it.

A coiled steel cable rides on the strap webbing, ending in a screw-gate carabiner. Loop it round a cafe chair leg, screw the gate shut, and the bag stops being something a passer-by lifts in one movement while you order. It answers the opportunist rather than the thief with a knife.

Where the charging port gets its power

A USB socket sits low on the bag's right side, fed by a short lead inside that plugs into your own power bank. Connect it once, close the zip, and charging a phone on a platform no longer means standing there with the bag open at your feet. Nothing inside stores power. A dead port means a flat power bank, which is a thing you can fix.

Shoes in the bottom, and what that costs

The bottom section unzips from the front and takes shoes up to a size 46 on its own lining, with two metal vents and a perforated sill so yesterday's running shoes are not sealed in with tomorrow's shirt. The honest part is the trade. That section pushes up into the main compartment through a soft lining, so a pair of boots eats room a pair of sandals would leave you. Pack the shoes first and the bag tells you what is left.

Where the cheap one gives itself away

A thirty dollar travel backpack cuts the same three corners every time. The back is a flat foam slab that sits on your shirt and stays there. The laptop goes in with everything else and takes the weight of whatever you pack on top of it. Nothing pulls the load in, so a half empty bag swings behind you.

Here the back panel is padded mesh in two raised channels with a valley between them, and the laptop drops into a padded sleeve of its own with a second panel below it for a tablet and the cables. Four buckled straps pull the whole thing flat, and a padded handle on the side carries it like a briefcase through a crowded train.

Which of the nine to take

Black is the only one with red flashes on it, and the only one where the trim around the shoe compartment vanishes into the body. On the other eight that trim reads as a black line drawn across a pale bag. Army Green and Dark Gray are the quiet ones and pass for luggage rather than sportswear, while Pink, Light Purple and Blue work nicely if you would rather spot your bag on a carousel. Everything else is identical, down to the last buckle.

It comes out of the car, goes under the seat, sits on your back and gets on with it, which is the whole job.
