Why carry a camera when you already own a phone

Your phone is a good camera attached to everything else in your life, and that is the problem with it. You take it out to photograph the table and you leave the table for eleven minutes. You hand it to a stranger at the top of a hill and watch them hold nine hundred dollars over a drop.

This is small enough to forget about and cheap enough to hand to anybody. Lend it to whoever asks. And when someone picks it up, they know what to do with it, because there is a button on the top and a screen on the back and nothing else to work out.

What 16x zoom is, and what it is not

The lens is fixed. It does not travel in and out, so the zoom is digital: the camera crops in on the middle of the frame and enlarges what is left, in steps up to sixteen times, on the two buttons marked w and t. That gets you the boat on the horizon and the bird on the far branch, and at full stretch the picture is softer than the one you started with. Every digital zoom works the same way.

What the fixed lens gives you in return is a camera 0.9 inches thick with nothing to extend, nothing to jam and nothing to catch on the inside of a bag.

Everything happens on the back

The 2.4 inch screen fills the left half and the controls sit down the right, all eight of them. The two round buttons at the top zoom. The silver ring below turns on the fill light, sets the self-timer to two, five or ten seconds, and opens or deletes what you have already shot. Underneath are mode and menu.

The camera focuses itself from four inches out to the horizon, finds faces on its own and waits for a smile if you ask it to. Hold the shutter and it takes three frames. There is nothing to set before you can take a picture, which is the point of a camera like this.

Nothing to buy afterwards

A 32 gigabyte card comes with it, which is the largest the camera reads and enough for thousands of photographs. The battery is a rechargeable lithium pack that lifts out, and it charges over USB from the same cable as everything else on your desk.

Photographs land as ordinary JPG files and video as AVI, so they open on anything. You copy them across by dragging them. There is no account holding them and nothing asking you to pay monthly to keep them.

The best camera is the one you have with you, and this one weighs three and a half ounces.
