The reason your phone is still on the nightstand

It's the alarm. That's the whole reason it's there, and it's why you end up reading email before you've stood up.

This replaces that one job properly. The digits fill about four-fifths of the face, edge to edge across six and a bit inches, so the time reads from across the room at a glance, at an angle, half asleep. And because it does nothing else, there's nothing to fall into. You check the time and that's where it ends.

Three finishes, and they are not the same clock

Two of the differences are real, and each one only shows up on a single variant. Worth knowing before you pick.

Mirror is the only one with a mirrored face. Its panel genuinely reflects the room, so with the display off it reads as a small mirror rather than a dead screen. Black and White have a flat black panel instead — no reflection, just white digits on black, which is easier to read in a bright room.

White is the only one with two alarms, marked ① and ② on the display, each settable Monday to Friday, Monday to Saturday, or every day. So the weekday alarm stays put and the weekend one is separate. Black and Mirror have a single alarm.

Everything else is the same on all three: the size, the clap control, the night dimming, the temperature and date, and snooze adjustable from one minute to sixty.

It dims itself once the room goes dark

A bright display at 3am wakes you up. Turn on night mode and the brightness drops automatically between 6pm and 6am, and you can move both ends of that window to whatever your evenings actually look like.

If you want it gone entirely, hold the snooze button for three seconds and the display switches off completely. Press any key and it comes back. The alarms keep running the whole time — it's the light that stops, not the clock.

Clap once and it wakes up

Run it on batteries and the display sleeps after ten seconds. Clap your hands, or just knock the nightstand, and it lights up long enough to read.

Worth knowing exactly how this works before you buy: clap control is a battery-power feature. With the cable plugged in the display simply stays on all the time, which is what most people want on a nightstand, and the clap sensor isn't part of that. Running it on batteries is the setup for a shelf or a bedside table with no outlet near it, where a screen glowing all night would be the problem rather than the point.

Either way you get the hour, the date and the temperature of the room you're actually standing in, on a face that reads clean from the doorway.
