A small faux succulent, already planted in a gray stone-look pot, made for the corner of a desk, the end of a bookshelf or the shelf above the bathroom sink. Pick a tall spiky aloe or one of four low rosettes in green, pink-tipped, mauve or sage, and each one arrives as a single potted plant, ready to put down.
No watering. No window needed. No pale, leggy stems after the two weeks you were away.
Green in the places a real plant gives up
The spots that most need a bit of green are usually the ones a living succulent hates: the bathroom shelf with no window, the desk at the back of the office, the bookcase on the dark side of the room. A real one there stretches toward the light, loses its color and, the first time you forget it, starts to rot or shrivel.
This one asks for nothing. The leaves keep their shape and color month after month, there is no soil to spill and no saucer of water to knock over, and the only upkeep is a dry cloth when it gathers dust. Leave it on a shelf you never think about and it still looks the way it did the day you set it there.
Five styles, and each one is sold on its own
The Aloe is the tall one, a fan of narrow pointed leaves standing well above the pot, so it holds its own beside a monitor or at the end of a long shelf. The Green Rosette is a dense crown of thick deep green leaves, the fullest and greenest of the five.
The Pink Tip Rosette and the Sage Rosette are low, open rosettes that look best from a little above. Pink Tip has a lime green center and mauve-pink edges, while Sage is a paler, chalky blue-green with coral tips. The Mauve Rosette is the darkest of the low ones, a dusky gray-green flushed with mauve, and it sits nicely against walnut or a dark painted wall.
Two or three different styles in a row look like a small collection rather than a matching set. The exact height of each one is in the specifications.
A small pot that looks like weathered stone
Every style comes in the same squat gray pot, two inches tall and a little wider than it is high, so mixed styles still look as if they belong together. The finish is matte and slightly rough, with lighter chalky patches and darker flecks, much like an old concrete planter, and the flat square-cut rim keeps it simple.
On the Aloe you can see a layer of reddish-brown gravel round the base of the leaves. Its warm gray sits quietly on oak, white laminate or a black desk, and it takes up less room than your coffee mug.
