Why one color in eight shapes works so well

A tree hung with matching round baubles tends to look flat from across the room, because every ball repeats the one before it and the eye has nowhere to rest. Keep the color the same and change the shape, and the tree starts to look layered, with long drops falling between the branches, onions sitting on the outer tips and balls filling the gaps further in.

The velvet finish helps too. A shiny bauble mostly shows a reflection of the room and a white spot from the nearest lamp. Flocking soaks the light up instead, so each piece reads as a solid shape of rich, matte color, and the ribs, swirls and diamond pattern on the textured pieces show up as soft bands of light and shade.

What is in the box

The two largest pieces are 6.3 inch quilted drops with a raised diamond pattern, and they work best near the middle of the tree where they can hang free. Below those in size come three kinds of 4.7 inch drop, three of each: a slim smooth one, a swirled one and a ribbed one.

The rounder pieces fill out the rest of the set. There are four ribbed onions and four smooth onions at 3.1 inches, three large balls of the same width and five smaller 2.4 inch balls that tuck in near the top or deep into the branches. Each one has a small gold-tone cap with a wire loop, ready for a hook or a ribbon.

Burgundy or green

Burgundy is a deep wine red, the warmer of the two, and it looks at home on a green tree with white lights, gold ribbon and pine cones. It gives a traditional tree one strong color without turning it bright red.

Green is a dark bottle green that suits a white or frosted tree, a garland on a pale mantel or a table centerpiece with brass and candlelight.
