The flowers, the baubles and the lights are already on it

A plain garland is only the start of the job. You still have to buy the baubles, wire each one in, find flowers that match, then thread a set of lights through the whole length and hide the cable. By the time it looks right on the mantel, most of an evening has gone and there are spare hooks all over the floor.

This one comes finished. The seven flowers are spaced along it, with a large one at each end. The baubles come in two sizes and two finishes, some shiny and some matte, so the light catches them unevenly, the way it does on a real decorated bough. The LEDs are spread through the whole length rather than bunched at one end. Each style is put together in one color, so nothing clashes and there is nothing left to match.

Gold, red, blue or pink, and where each one looks right

Gold pairs ivory flowers with gold baubles and fine gold glitter, and it is the easiest to live with: it suits white mantels, brass, cream walls and natural wood, and it sits well beside decorations you already own. Red is the traditional choice, with red flowers edged in gold and red baubles against the green, and it is the one for a home that does Christmas in red and plaid.

Blue is the cooler of the four, with pale silvery-blue flowers, deep royal blue baubles and pale gold centers, and it looks crisp against gray walls and white woodwork. Pink is the softest, with pink flowers, silver glitter leaves and pale pink baubles, for a lighter room or a pastel scheme.

Long enough for the mantel and down both sides

At 106 inches it runs the full width of most mantels with enough left over to hang down each side of the fireplace. It is just as happy laid along a stair rail, framed over an indoor doorway or set down the middle of the dining table as a runner between the candles. The branches are flexible, so you can bend it around a corner or into a gentle curve.

The lights stay on steadily or flash, and they run on three AA batteries, which are not included. It is made for indoor use. At the end of the season it goes back in the box exactly as it came out, flowers and lights still in place, ready for next year.
