Most of the work of an artificial tree happens before it looks like anything. You slot the sections together, bend every branch into shape, string the lights, then go back for the decorations, and at the end of the season you do the whole thing in reverse and try to fit it back into a box that never quite closes.

This tree skips all of that because of how it is built. The body is one long flocked garland coiled into rings, so it collapses on itself like a spring. Stand the pole in its base, lift the tree up and the rings drop into place as a tall, tapered cone, with every bauble already where it belongs. To put it away, you lower it again and it settles into a flat round shape that stores on a closet shelf.

Snow on every branch, and it reads from across the room

Each ring is packed with short green needles under a thick coat of white flocking, with frosted holly-shaped leaves scattered all through them. Up close you see green under the snow. From the doorway it looks like a tree that has been standing outside on a cold night.

The warm white lights sit deep in the foliage rather than on the surface, so the whole tree glows softly instead of sparkling in bright points. The slim shape matters too. It takes up far less floor than a full round tree of the same height, which is what lets it stand beside a sofa, in a hallway or in the corner of an apartment without pushing the furniture around.

Red and gold, or pink and silver

Red and Gold is the traditional look. Glossy red baubles and soft gold ones are spread evenly from the tip to the lowest ring, and against the white flocking they suit wood, plaid, evergreen and a fireplace mantel.

Pink and Silver is the softer choice, with satin rose-pink baubles mixed with mirror and glitter silver ones, some on their own and some in small groups. It looks right in cream, white and pale gray rooms, and anywhere red would feel too strong.
