A string of small white ghosts, each one molded with a lifted arm and a soft, cloud-edged hem, and each lit from the inside by its own warm white LED. Ten, twenty or thirty of them hang on a fine clear wire, and you choose whether the string runs on batteries, on USB or on both.
No bare bulbs. No glare. Nothing on the wire that looks like it came out of the Christmas box.
A ghost that still looks like one in daylight
Most Halloween strings are built for the few hours after dark, and for the rest of the day they are a row of pale shapes on a cable that nobody could name from across the room. That is how they spend most of October, because most of October happens with the lights off.
These are shaped properly. Each ghost has a rounded head with two big black eyes and a small smile, one arm raised as if it is waving, and a hem that breaks into round lobes along the bottom. Fine ribbing runs down the body, so even switched off it reads as a little figure rather than a lump of white plastic.
Switch it on and the whole shell glows, brightest at the head and softening toward the hem, rather than showing one hard point of light behind a face. The light is a warm, candle-colored white that sits comfortably against wood, brick and a dark window.
Four ways to power it, and which one to pick
The battery box is the simple one. It goes wherever the string does, along a banister, across a bookshelf or down the middle of the party table, and nothing runs back to the wall. On the ten-ghost string it gives a steady light, and on the twenty and thirty it adds a flash setting.
The USB version runs from a USB port, a phone charger plug or a power bank. It suits a shelf by the television or a window near an outlet, where the string stays up all month and you would rather not keep buying batteries for it.
Battery box and USB puts both on one string, so it can sit plugged in by the sofa one week and run on batteries at the front door the next.
The last option puts the batteries in a waterproof box and adds a remote with eight lighting modes. Pick it for a porch rail or a high branch, anywhere the box ends up out of reach or outside under cover.
Ten, twenty or thirty
Ten ghosts suit a single window, a bookshelf or the middle of a table. Twenty take a mantel or a doorway nicely, and thirty are the ones for a staircase, a porch rail or a long run wound through the branches of a tree. The exact lengths are in the specifications.
Put them up in the first week of October and leave them glowing until the pumpkins go out with the trash.
