A light-up decoration spends most of its life switched off

You buy one of these for the way it looks at seven in the evening, and that is a fair reason to buy it. But a wreath goes up in the first week of October and hangs there for a month. Most of that month is daylight, and the lights are off. Almost everything in this category is designed for the dark and looks like a bag of plastic in the morning.

Twelve ghosts made out of cloth do not have that problem. Unlit they still read as ghosts from across a driveway, because the shape is cut from fabric rather than printed onto it. The light is what the evening adds, not the only thing holding the picture together.

Cloth is the part the cheap ones get wrong

The version at a third of the price is a vacuum-formed plastic shell with a face stamped into it and a bulb rattling around behind it. You can tell from the doorstep. This one is a fine open-weave cloth, light enough to see through, draped over each rounded head and falling into a skirt below it. The hems are left raw, so the corners fray into a few loose threads, which is exactly what makes a sheet look like a sheet.

The eyes are the other giveaway. Each ghost has two black felt ovals, cut and set slightly out of line with each other, and no mouth at all. They are stuck on rather than printed, so up close they sit proud of the weave and catch a little of the light coming through it.

When the lights come on, the warm white glow sits inside each head and shines out through the weave instead of bouncing off a shell. The heads read as twelve faces and the skirts fall away into shadow underneath them.

A front door is the obvious place and not the only one

It runs on batteries, so nothing has to reach a socket by the front door. That is what makes the outside of the house possible at all. Hang it on a porch door or a sheltered outside wall, where it does the job it was built for and greets anybody coming up the path.

Indoors it goes further than most people expect. On the inside of a window it faces the street after dark and lights the room behind it at the same time. Above a hall console, on a chimney breast or over a stair return, it is quiet enough to leave up all month. The house never ends up looking like a party.

Put it up on the first of October, and by the time anybody knocks it has already done the work.
