A round black lantern, just under six inches tall, with a Halloween scene built up in layers behind its window and a small flame-shaped LED burning somewhere in the middle of it. It stands on its own wedge of a base, and a thin wire handle arches over the top.

No wax. No smoke. No cord trailing off the windowsill.

The scene has depth in it, because it is cut in layers

Almost every Halloween light this size is one flat printed panel with a bulb behind it, and you can tell at a glance, because the whole picture lights up evenly and nothing in it casts a shadow. It reads as a sticker on a lampshade. That is the thing you notice first, and it is the thing you get tired of by the second week of October.

This one is a shallow drum with the scene set back inside it, and the scene is three separate cut layers rather than one sheet. The sky and the moon sit at the back. The houses, the spires and the bare trees stand in front of the sky, cut to shape. A dark band of ground, gravestones and small grinning faces runs across the bottom, closest to the front. The light sits between the layers, so the buildings throw edges onto the sky behind them and the foreground goes properly black.

The light itself is shaped like a flame. It narrows to a point behind the middle of the scene, the way a candle would, and it turns the inside of the drum a warm gold.

A battery, so it goes where a candle is a bad idea

It runs from a button cell tucked inside the base. There is no cable to hide, no adapter to find and no thinking about where the nearest outlet is, which is the whole reason a small lantern like this ends up somewhere a lamp never could.

Which of the three to pick

They are the same lantern with a different scene inside, so this is only a question of which picture you want glowing on the shelf. Pumpkin is the friendliest of the three and the one children go for first, with a stack of carved pumpkins in a witch's hat, a black cat sitting on top and a full orange moon behind them. Witch is the classic silhouette, a witch on a broom crossing the moon with two castle spires under her. Castle is the busiest and the darkest, a whole crooked town in deep blue and purple with lit windows, two moons and bats right across the top.

The Set of Three suits a mantel or a long table rather than one shelf, because three identical black lanterns line up cleanly and only the picture inside each one changes. Put them out at the end of September, and the last thing you do on the first of November is switch three of them off.
