A garden light earns its place on the ordinary evenings out there, not just on the one night a year you decorate for. There is nothing printed on these and no seasonal shape to them. Just a woven sphere with light running through it, so the set that hangs over the dinner table in summer can glow in bare branches through the winter.

Then it comes out again for a birthday in the spring without looking as if it was borrowed from another occasion. Each light is rated IP55 and made for a wet location, so a shower of rain is no reason to take it down.

Three sizes, and one transformer for up to five of them

The small is 7.9 inches across, a little under the size of a soccer ball, with 80 LEDs. The medium is 11.8 inches with 120, and the large is 15.7 inches with 140, big enough to read from the far end of the lawn. Hung together at different heights, a mix of sizes looks like a cluster rather than a row of identical lamps.

Every light runs at 24 V, and a transformer comes with each one. A single transformer can power up to five lights at once. Three or four in one tree can share one power point, or each light can have its own where they hang far apart. Keep the total wattage within the transformer's capacity, and install the connections to your local electrical standards.

Nine light colors, and which one suits your garden

Warm white is the choice for a dining terrace, a soft yellow cream at 2200 to 2500 K that sits close to candlelight. White is a cooler 5000 K, which looks sharp against modern paving and in a winter tree.

For a party there are red, yellow, blue, pink, green and purple, plus a multicolor version with several colors of LED on the same sphere. Every color has a white housing except yellow, whose strips are yellow even when it is off. Hang a few in the tree nearest the table, and the garden becomes a place you stay in after dark.
