You carve one on the Saturday, it looks wonderful on the Sunday, and by Wednesday the lid has sunk and the inside smells like a bin. That is the deal with a real one, and most people take it, because the alternative on the shelf is usually a hollow plastic thing with a face stamped into it and an orange bulb rattling around inside.

These are cast in resin, so they have weight and a surface. Nothing about them is hollow-sounding or thin. They go back in the box on the first of November and come out the following year exactly as they went in, which is the whole argument for buying a pumpkin that was never alive.

Three shapes at three heights, and none of them is big

Three of the same ornament in a row reads as stock. These are three different castings: a tall fluted gourd, a round pumpkin, and a wide flat one that sits low. Put them together and you get a group with a shape to it, which is why a set of three works on a mantel where one on its own just looks lost.

Read the sizes before you picture them, because they are smaller than the photographs suggest. The gourd is 3.7 inches tall, the round pumpkin 2.5, and the flat one 1.9. That makes them shelf and table ornaments rather than porch ones. All three will sit along a windowsill, down the middle of a dinner table, or on a stack of books beside a chair without taking the surface over.

The crackle is where the light gets out

Look at one in daylight with the light off and the surface is a matte orange, deep red along the ribs, fading to cream at the base, with a fine web of dark cracks over every panel and a black stem on top. It looks like a solid painted object rather than a plastic one. Switch it on and those same cracks turn into pale veins of light, because they are the route the glow takes out.

That is the difference between this and a molded lantern with a bulb in it. The light does not come out as one flat panel, it comes out through a pattern, and the stem stays a solid black shape against it.

Each one takes button batteries, which are not included, and has its own switch underneath. They go on one at a time and there is no cable running anywhere. Set them out in the last week of September and leave them.
