A small tree for the table, about 20 inches tall, with branches made of wrapped metal wire and tiny lights at the ends of them. Set it on a sideboard, a mantel or a bedside table, touch the base when the evening comes in, and that corner of the room glows softly while the big light stays off.

No shade to dust. No plug to hunt for. It runs from a USB cable or three AA batteries, so it stands wherever it looks best.

The light for the hours when the ceiling light is too much

Most rooms have one bright overhead light and nothing in between, so the choice through the long evenings of the season is either a room lit like an office or a room left half dark. A string of fairy lights helps, until it has to be pinned along a shelf and the cable runs down the wall.

This puts the same small lights on a tree that stands by itself. Lit, it reads as a branch caught in candlelight, a soft glow on the table that does not light the whole room or shine in anyone's eyes. Switched off in daylight, it is a silver or gold tree on the shelf, so it still looks like it belongs there at noon.

Six styles, and two very different kinds of light

Four of the styles carry 108 tiny LEDs on hair-fine wires at the tips of silver branches, which gives the look of a tree covered in sparks. Warm White is the cozy, candle-colored one and suits wood, linen and greenery. Cool White is crisper and bluer, and sits well with white walls, glass and frosted decorations. Multicolor mixes warm amber with blue, green and red, the closest of the six to old-fashioned Christmas tree lights. Pink lights the whole tree in a soft rosy pink.

The other two have 36 round frosted pearls instead, each one on its own short stem, so the tree looks like a branch in blossom rather than a scatter of sparks. Pearl has milky white pearls that glow warm on gold branches. Pink Pearl has soft pink pearls on paler branches. The pearls give a gentler, rounder light, and they are the ones to pick if you want the tree to look like a decoration first and a light second.

A USB cable or batteries, and one touch on the base

The tree plugs into a round white base about 4.7 inches across. A USB cable is included and fits a small socket in the side of the base, so you can run it from a laptop, a USB wall adapter or a power bank. Or put three AA batteries in the box underneath and take the cable away altogether. The batteries are not included. To switch it on or off, you touch the small power symbol on top of the base.

The branches bend, so you can spread the crown wide across a sideboard, pull it in narrower for a windowsill, or tip a few branches forward over the edge of a shelf. When the season is over, the tree lifts out of the base and both pieces go back in the box. It is made for indoor use, on a mantel, a hall table, a desk or a bedside table, and it is ready to come back out the following Christmas.
