Nine Christmas baubles, each 3.1 inches across and covered all over in a soft velvet flocking, in muted earth tones that sit quietly together on the tree. They are shatterproof, so a ball knocked off a low branch lands on the floor in one piece, and they come packed in a divided box that keeps them safe from one Christmas to the next.
No glare from the tree lights. No sharp shards to sweep up. No single loud color fighting with the rest of the room.
Velvet in colors that already go together
A shiny bauble mostly shows you a reflection of the room, with a white spot from the nearest lamp, so a tree full of them can look busy before you have even started on the lights. The flocked surface on these is matte, and it takes the light as a soft glow along the lit edge with an even, deep color everywhere else.
The colors are the other half of it. Olive, gray, tan, cream, peach and terracotta are the shades of natural wood, linen and stone, so they settle into a living room that is not decorated in red and green. They look at home beside white lights, a plain fir and brown paper parcels under the tree. Each ball has an antique gold-toned cap and a short brown ribbon loop, ready to hang.
Three sets, three moods
Mixed gives you nine different colors, one of each: gray, rust, olive, terracotta, cream, tan, khaki, peach and charcoal. It is the set for a tree where you want every branch to show something different and still have the whole thing read as one scheme.
Olive, Gray and Tan has three of each color and is the deepest of the three. The olive and gray look good against dark green needles and warm white lights, and the tan keeps them from turning heavy.
Cream, Khaki and Peach is the lightest set, also three of each. It suits a white or frosted tree, pale wood and a room kept mostly in neutrals, and it takes on a warm tone in the evening once the tree lights come on.
A size that fills the gaps
At 3.1 inches, each bauble is a little bigger than a tennis ball. That is large enough to hold its own on a full-size tree and still small enough to tuck in between the branches where the gaps show.
They work away from the tree too. Pile the nine in a wide bowl on the coffee table, lay a few along a garland on the mantel, or hang three from a wreath by the door. When the season is over, they go back into their own box, one ball to each compartment, ready for next year.
