The plate feels the weight of the cup. That is the whole control. There is no dial to turn and no rocker to find behind the monitor.

It matters most at the end of the day. A warmer with a switch on the side stays on until you remember it. You remember it at eleven at night, from the other side of the house. This one went off when you carried the mug to the sink.

Two settings, and the plate tells you which one

The range runs from 104 to 140 °F. The lower setting suits milk, hot chocolate and anything you are about to hand to a child. The higher one is for black coffee and for tea.

The glass reads it back to you. Blue for the lower setting, red for the higher, and a pink flash while it waits for a cup.

Almost anything flat-bottomed will stand on it. Ceramic, glass or metal. A mug, a tumbler, a small glass teapot. The base wants to sit inside the plate rather than hang over the edge. And the top is glass, so a spilled ring has nothing to soak into.

Then it sits where you put it. The desk, the bench by the kettle, the chair you actually read in. And you finish the cup you poured.
