Why Norfolk pine drapes where an ordinary garland sits

Most artificial garlands are built from short, stiff fir tips packed tightly round a stem, which gives you a neat green rope that stays exactly where you put it and looks the same from every angle. Norfolk pine grows differently. Each sprig here is a long, narrow spray with fine, short needles set close all the way along it. The sprays arch and droop under their own length, so wherever the garland meets an edge it spills over and hangs down.

That is what makes it look relaxed instead of fitted. Along a mantel the ends cascade down the sides, on a stair rail the sprigs fall between the spindles, and down a table they spread out onto the wood. The color is a muted deep green, a little lighter toward the tips, and the needles have no gloss, frost or glitter on them.

Three lengths, and which one fits where

The Short, at 59 inches, suits a console table, a sideboard, a window ledge or a narrow mantel, with a little left to trail over one end. The Medium, at 71 inches, covers most mantel shelves with short drops at each side, or runs down the center of a dining table. The Long, at 106 inches, is the one for a full mantel with long trails falling down both sides, or for a good stretch of staircase handrail. If you are between two, the longer one drapes better than the shorter one stretches.
