A run of small white ghosts on a fine wire, each one lit from the inside by its own LED. You can have ten of them or fifty, glowing warm white or different colors along the string, and you can run them on batteries, on a remote, or on a solar panel pushed into a flower bed.

No socket. No extension lead down the hall. Nothing taped across the front step.

Everything worth decorating is nowhere near a socket

Think about where you actually want lights at the end of October. The banister, the mantel, the porch rail, the window that faces the street, the branch over the front gate. Not one of those has a plug behind it, so the string either stays in the box or it gets run to the nearest outlet and the cable becomes the thing everybody looks at.

This one carries its own power. The battery box is small enough to tuck behind a banister post or drop inside a pumpkin, and the solar version keeps nothing in the house at all: the panel goes on a spike in the border and the wire runs out from there.

What a cheap ghost string gets wrong

The face, usually. Two dots and a thin line reads as a snowman from six feet away. These carry a wide filled black crescent for a mouth, turned up to a point at both corners, and the hem below is cut into two lobes so the tail hooks over to one side. It still looks like a ghost with the lights off, which matters, because a string of lights spends most of the day switched off.

Then there is the wire. On the battery and remote versions it is clear and twisted fine enough to vanish against a painted banister in daylight. On the solar version it is dark black, which is the right call outdoors, because it easily disappears into a hedge instead of drawing a silver line across it.

Which version to pick

Battery is the plain one. A flat clear box with a slide switch on the end, small enough to hide behind almost anything, and the only way to get the short ten-ghost run for a single window.

Remote does the most. Eight lighting modes are printed on the lid of its box, running from a slow fade through chasing and twinkling to steady on, and the handset adds a timer and a dimmer so you never have to reach the box again. That suits a banister or a long mantel, where the controller ends up somewhere awkward.

Solar is the outdoor answer, and the longest strings are solar only. A small square panel tilts on its bracket, the spike pushes into soil or a pot, and there is nothing to replace for the rest of the season.

On light color, warm white settles quietly against wood and paint indoors and multicolor is the party one.

Where they end up

Wound along a banister, laid across a mantel behind the candles, threaded through the tree by the gate, or dropped into the bowl of sweets by the door so the whole bowl glows.

Put them up at the start of the month, leave them, and take them down in November.
