Quiet blocks between the busy ones

The quilt is laid out in big rectangles, and roughly every other one is a plain block in orange, rust or sage, stitched with fine parallel channels that give it a soft, ribbed texture. Between them sit the patterned blocks, each carrying a different small motif woven into the cotton in orange, blue, green and red.

The plain blocks give the eye somewhere to rest. That matters. It is why a pattern with this much going on still looks calm on a made bed, and why it sits as happily beside white sheets and a wood floor as it does in a room full of color. Up close, the woven motifs stand slightly proud of the cloth and the quilted channels catch the light.

Three layers of breathable cotton gauze

The cloth is cotton gauze, three layers of it, which keeps the quilt light and breathable while giving it enough body to lie flat across the mattress. It drapes into soft folds at the corners. Nothing about it stands stiff.

On a warm night it can be the only cover you need. When the house cools down, lay it over the duvet and push it back if you get too warm. Turn back a corner and the underside shows the same blocks with blue in the lead, edged in the same border, so a folded-back top edge still looks finished.

2 Pillowcases is the pair sold by itself, for a bed that already has the quilt. Either way, all the color arrives in a single layer. The rest of the room can stay simple.
