A small carved pumpkin on a black garden stake, with its own solar panel fixed on a short arm beside it. Push the spike into a flower bed or the edge of the path, let the panel charge through the day, and in the evening the face glows warm through its cut-out eyes and grin.
Nothing to plug in. Nothing to run across the lawn. Choose the classic jack-o'-lantern or the one wearing a witch hat.
A path marker that happens to be a pumpkin
Most gardens have a few places that need a light once it gets dark: the edge of the front walk, the corner where the lawn meets the bed, the step down onto the patio. A stake light is the usual answer, and for eleven months of the year a plain one does the job perfectly well.
In October the same spot can do two things at once. Each of these marks the edge of the path like any other stake light, and it reads as Halloween from the street. By day it is simply a bright orange face among the leaves. After dark the carved face is lit from inside, so a row of them along the walk shows the way to the door and sets the season in one go.
Push it in, and the sun does the charging
The head sits on a square black cap at the top of the stake, and the panel sticks out from the side of that cap, level with the bottom of the head. Set it where it gets daylight, clear of an overhanging shrub, and the panel charges it through the day. There is no wiring to lay and no outlet to find, so it goes wherever it looks right.
Rated IP55 and suitable for wet locations, it can stay in the bed through a rainy night. It arrives partly assembled, and the spike pushes straight into soft soil.
Classic face or witch hat
The Classic is a round, ribbed orange pumpkin with a curved green stem on top. Its face is carved right through the shell, with two slanted eyes, a small triangle nose and a wide grin with square teeth hanging into it, so when it is on, the light pours out through the whole face.
The Witch Hat is a taller amber pumpkin with a round nose and full cheeks, wearing a dark hat with a rust band and a crooked tip. It glows through its eyes, its grin and a jagged crack down one side. The Classic reads best from across the yard, and the Witch Hat has more character up close. Mix the two along a path and every one of them looks a little different after dark.
