Most of Halloween is made to be thrown away

Think about what the season is usually made of. Printed card, vacuum-formed plastic with a seam down the back, a foam pumpkin, and a bag of cobwebs that comes out already gray. It photographs well for a week. Then it goes in a box, and next October half of it comes out bent.

This is cast resin with the detail molded into it rather than printed onto it, so the eye sockets are real hollows and the teeth are separate teeth with the shadow between them. It goes back in the box in November and comes out the same the following year.

The candle sits down inside the head

The top of the cranium is cut off flat and the inside is hollowed into a round well 1.7 inches across. A tealight drops straight in and sits low, so what you see above the rim is the flame rather than the tin it came in. It is not tealights only. Any candle with a base up to 1.7 inches sits in the same well, so a votive or a short pillar stands taller out of the top of the head and does the same job.

Lit, the light comes from inside the skull instead of from somewhere beside it. It sits in the top of the head and washes down over the brow, which is what puts the shadow into the sockets and the grooves between the teeth. The candle is not included, with any of the three options.

The pedestal is what stops it reading as a toy

Below the tooth row the stem is a proper turned baluster: a collar, a pear-shaped swell, three stacked rings and a domed foot. That is the profile of an ordinary candlestick, and it is the reason this sits on a mantel next to the real ones instead of on a side table with the plastic spiders.

The Bone finish has a brown wash rubbed into every recess. The sockets, the tooth grooves, the fine crack lines across the temples, the grooves between the rings on the stem. Raised surfaces stay pale and the hollows go dark, which is the whole trick of it. The shape is what you see from across the room and the finish is what you see up close.

Bone, Black, or one of each

Bone is the one that reads as a skull from the doorway, and it works best against something dark behind it, so a charcoal wall or a walnut shelf suits it. Black is the quieter of the two. It loses its detail at a distance and turns into a silhouette, which is why it sits happily in a room that is not decorated for anything and can stay out all year.
