Real wooden handles are lovely right up until they meet the dishwasher, and then they tend to dry out, fade and want the occasional rub of oil to stay looking right. These handles are ABS with a wood-grain finish, so you get the warm brown grain beside every plate and the whole set still goes in the dishwasher with everything else.

Each handle is a straight, squared-off bar with softly beveled edges and a flat end. A thin line of the steel runs along the edges and shows at the very end of the handle, which frames the grain neatly and ties the handle to the polished head above it.

The set holds 6 knives, 6 forks, 6 soup spoons, 6 teaspoons and 6 dessert forks. The knife has a gently curved blade with fine serrations toward the tip, and the dinner fork has four tines and sits a little shorter than the knife, at about 8 inches.

The soup spoon is a full dinner size with a wide oval bowl, for soup, cereal and pasta. The teaspoon and the dessert fork are the smaller pair, for stirring coffee and for cake, so nobody has to rinse a dinner fork halfway through the meal just to eat dessert.

Silver or Gold, with the same warm handles on both

Silver is the classic choice, bright mirror-polished steel that sits easily with white china, dark stoneware and everyday glassware. Gold is a warmer, richer tone that picks up the brown in the handles and makes a plain table look dressed for an occasion.

Only the heads change between the two, so whichever you pick, the table reads as one matched set the moment the last place is laid.

Care

In the dishwasher, stand the pieces handles down in the cutlery basket for the best clean. To wash by hand, use warm water and a mild detergent, then dry straight away so the steel does not spot. Avoid long soaks and leaving acidic food on the pieces, both of which can dull the finish over time.

Use a soft cloth rather than a scouring pad, which will scratch the polish.
