The fold on top is there to hold your straw

An ordinary cup gives a straw nowhere to go. It leans on the rim, slides round to the far side every time you set the cup down, and sooner or later tips out onto the desk. On this one a section of the rim has been folded inward and flattened across the opening, and a round hole goes straight through it close to the wall. Drop a straw in and it stays where you put it, standing at the edge while the ice sits in the open half below.

The rest of the mouth stays open. On a cold morning you drink from it like any other cup. The fold just sits there, carrying the same stripes as the wall beneath it.

Bold stripes with a little wander in them

The stripes run straight up from the base to the rim and carry on over the top of the fold. Look closely and you will see they are not ruler-straight. Each one wavers slightly along its edge, some run a touch wider than the next, and the color sits deeper in some places than others under the glaze. Stripes that come out perfectly even all the way round tend to look flat on a shelf. These have a little life in them.

The wall underneath is not a smooth cylinder either. Soft dents and shallow ripples run all over it, and under the glossy glaze they catch the light in a way a perfectly smooth cup never does. On the front sits a small raised label pressed with the words coffee time, with a stitched line around its edge like a tag sewn onto a jacket.

No handle, and it sits better in the hand for it

Just under four inches tall and not quite three and a half across, it fits in one hand the way a tumbler does, with your fingers wrapped around the stripes. That makes it an easy cup to keep beside a keyboard or on a narrow windowsill, where a handle is the part that gets caught. It holds about ten fluid ounces, enough for a full cup of coffee or an iced one poured over a handful of ice.

Black looks sharpest on a desk, brown sits warmest on a wooden table, and green is the one that suits a kitchen in the morning light. Whichever you take, the stripes run a little differently from one cup to the next.
