Woven fabric that breathes when the sun is out

Plenty of hammocks are cut from thin parachute nylon, which packs small but feels slick against bare arms and holds the heat on a sunny day. This one is woven canvas with a soft, slightly tweedy texture, and the weave lets air move through it, so you can lie in it through a warm afternoon without sticking to it. It dries quickly after a damp morning or a passing shower.

The stripes run the full length of the bed. Blue mixes navy, royal blue, sky blue and lime green on navy cords. Red mixes narrower bands of bright red, violet, golden yellow and gray-green on red cords.

Rope loops at both ends, and nothing else to work out

Each end of the canvas is folded into a stitched hem, and a fan of cords runs from it to a thick wrapped loop. Pass one of the two ropes through each loop, tie them round a tree, a post or the hooks of a stand, and you are lying down a few minutes later. There are no spreader bars, so the fabric wraps around you like a cocoon instead of lying flat like a cot.

It takes up to 441 lb, with room for one adult to stretch out or two to share it. Hang it low, with the bed no more than about three feet off the ground, and check the ropes and knots before you climb in.

Folds into its own bag

When the day is done, fold the hammock, coil the two ropes and drop everything into the drawstring bag, which is striped to match. It rides in the trunk to the campsite, the beach or the park and comes out again in the backyard the next weekend. Keep it well away from campfires and grills, because the fabric is not fireproof, and it will be ready whenever the next slow afternoon turns up.
