A tiered fruit stand that holds two or three glossy, boat-shaped bowls one above the other on a natural bamboo frame, so the fruit that used to spread across the counter fits into the space of a single bowl and stays where you can see it. Each bowl lifts straight off the frame, which makes it just as easy to carry one to the table as it is to rinse it out.

Most fruit bowls fail the same way. The weekly shop goes in all at once, the heavy apples settle on the soft peaches, and the grapes you bought on Saturday turn up crushed at the bottom by Wednesday.

Two or three bowls of fruit on one bowl's worth of counter

A stand like this builds upward instead of outward. The bottom bowl sits low on its bamboo foot, the next one rises above it on its own pair of arms, and on the 3 Tier a smaller bowl tops the stack, so the fruit gets sorted into layers rather than piled into one heap.

That sorting is the whole point. Apples and oranges can share the bottom bowl, bananas lie along the middle one, and grapes or cherries sit on top where nothing heavier ever lands on them. Every bowl is shallow and open, so a glance tells you what is ripe and what is running low.

It does not have to be fruit. The same tiers keep lemons, limes and garlic within reach of the stove, hold bread rolls and pastries on a breakfast table, or set out snacks for guests on a sideboard.

Lift a bowl off and take it with you

Nothing holds the bowls in place except the arms they rest on, and the frame stands at one end only, which leaves the other side open. Slide a bowl out, set it down on the table to serve from, and put it back when you are done.

The same move makes cleaning simple. The bowls come off one at a time, wash by hand at the sink, and go back onto a frame that never had to get wet. They are plastic with a glossy finish, so they look like glazed ceramic on the counter but stay light in the hand, even when you are carrying the full bottom bowl across the kitchen.

A bamboo frame you can see is screwed together

The frame is two flat bamboo side panels, each cut in a wavy curve with rounded arms for the bowls and a wide arched foot, joined by bamboo bars. Small round screw heads show on the outside of each panel where the bars meet it, and a round bar runs across the base between the two feet. It arrives flat and goes together with the screws in the box.

Green is a deep teal-green that looks darkest against a pale counter and lets bright fruit stand out. White is clean and quiet beside light cabinets and marble. Beige is a soft warm neutral that sits easily with oak, linen and stone. Pick the 2 Tier for a compact counter, a coffee corner or a smaller household, and the 3 Tier when the fruit, the vegetables and the bread all need somewhere to go.

Care

Wipe the bamboo frame with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth, and keep it out of standing water, which can make bamboo swell or mark over time. Avoid leaving it in strong direct sunlight for long periods.

Wash the bowls by hand in warm water with a mild detergent, and dry them fully before they go back on the frame. They are not dishwasher safe.

Check the screws now and then, and tighten any that have worked loose.
