It throws a narrow cone at whoever happens to be nearest, so one person gets all of it, everyone else gets the noise, and then somebody stands up and turns it and the problem simply changes seats. That is why so many of them are back in the cupboard by August. They were never cooling a room. They were cooling a chair.

The outlet here is a column rather than a disc. It runs from just under the cap almost the whole way to the base, so the air leaves along the height of the tower, and then the tower swings itself through 80 degrees and carries it across the room and back.

Tall, and almost nothing on the floor

The only part of it touching the carpet is a flat round disc, ribbed underneath so the weight is carried out to the rim. That matters more than it sounds, because something turning itself back and forth for eight hours has to stand on a base that does not slowly walk. It fits the gap between an armchair and a wall, or the end of a bed, and nothing in the room has to move to make space for it.

There is nothing in there a hand can reach

Every fan has something spinning inside it and this one is no different. The air is moved by a cross-flow drum, a long thin cylinder carrying 35 closely set vanes, running most of the height of the tower. What matters is not whether the blades are there. It is where they are.

The drum sits behind a fixed column of narrow vertical fins that do not open, tilt or come off, and the air is drawn in through a panel of fine slots on the far side of the body. A small hand pressed flat against the front of a running fan finds nothing moving. A cage fan cannot say that, whatever is printed on the box.

Set it at bedtime and let it turn itself off

Three speeds, and they are gentle, natural and strong rather than a row of numbers you work out by trying them. The timer runs up to twelve hours, which covers both of the things people actually do with a fan at night: run it the ninety minutes it takes to fall asleep and let it stop on its own, or set it for the whole night and wake to a quiet room.

The setting shows as blue digits on a small round display set into the black column, and in a dark room that display is the only light the fan makes. The remote does the rest of it from under the duvet, which on a tower this tall is the difference between using the timer and getting up to switch it off.
