Ultra Thin Champagne Glass with a Wide Tulip Bowl on a Long Fine Stem

A champagne glass with a wide tulip bowl on a stem so fine it nearly disappears, so the drink you hand somebody stops being a narrow column of bubbles and starts smelling like the wine you paid for.

No chimney of a flute. No shallow coupe that spills before it reaches the table. No thick rolled rim in front of the wine. Pour it, hold it by the stem, and give it a minute.

The reason champagne in a flute smells of almost nothing

A flute is about a finger wide at the top. Room enough for the bubbles, and none for anything else, so the aroma leaves the surface and goes past you into the room. You get the fizz. You rarely get the wine.

This bowl opens to 3.3 inches across, a couple of inches down from the rim, and that is where the wine lies. Above the widest point the wall turns back in, so what comes off the surface gathers under your nose instead of drifting off the table. The bead still runs. It runs up a wider column now, and the rest of the drink comes with it.

The wall is half a millimeter thick, and you notice on the first sip

The rim is a plain cut edge, not a rolled lip, so there is no bead of glass to meet before the wine does. Thick glassware puts a hard round bumper between your mouth and the drink, and you get used to that without ever deciding to. Drink from this once and the bumper is gone.

Why not the cheap one

Run a thumb up the stem of a cheap champagne glass and you will usually find a seam, because the bowl and the stem were made separately and stuck together. This stem is drawn out of the bottom of the bowl in one piece, so there is nothing to feel.

The other two corners are the rim and the foot. A cheap rim is rolled and thickened so it survives the box. A cheap foot is made heavy, because weight costs less than balance. This one has a plain cut rim and a thin flat foot, and it stands steady anyway.

Taller than the shelf you have in mind

It stands 9.4 inches from the table to the rim, which is tall for a champagne glass. Measure the shelf before it arrives.

On a wall this thin, hand washing is the safe answer. Hold it by the foot, not the bowl, and it will outlast every heavy glass in the cupboard. Then set it down in front of somebody and watch them slow down.
