Most coat racks are a row of pegs and nothing else, so the keys, the wallet and the sunglasses end up on whatever flat surface happens to be nearest the door. This one gives them a place of their own. The top is a shallow tray: the curved front and the rounded ends rise a little above the shelf surface, so small things sit inside a low rim instead of on an open edge.

The five hooks run along the underside, set in close under the shelf. From across the room you see one clean band of wood rather than a row of hardware, and when a coat goes on, it hangs straight down in front of the wall.

Slim enough for the narrowest hallway

At 2.8 inches deep it sits almost flat to the wall, which matters in a hallway where a coat stand would be in the way of the door and a bench would be in the way of everyone. It is 20.7 inches long and 4 inches tall, long enough for a coat at each end and a bag or two in between.

The front is a single curve of wood veneer that wraps round into soft rounded ends. There are no sharp corners to catch a shoulder in a tight space, and the grain runs unbroken from one end to the other.

Three finishes, and two screws to put it up

Walnut is a deep warm brown with an open grain, and it looks right against a white, gray or pale green wall. Natural is a light honey wood that suits pale floors and a calm, Scandinavian sort of hallway. White almost disappears into a white wall and leaves the coat and whatever is on top to do the talking.

It hangs on two screws through keyhole slots in the black back panel, and the mounting hardware comes in the box, so you will need to drill two holes. The same rack works just as well in a bedroom for a robe and a watch, or by the back door for a jacket and the car keys. Wherever it goes, the things you reach for on the way out are finally waiting in one place.
