You already know what a stopper does. Yours is in the back of a drawer. The bottle you opened on Tuesday is on the counter with the cork shoved back in at an angle.

This one goes into the neck and stays there. Closed, it seals the bottle. Twisted open, it pours the next glass.

No cork wrestling. No cling film over the top. Nothing to pull out before you pour. Push it in once and leave it there.

The half bottle nobody ever finishes

Two glasses on a Tuesday is normal. The other half is the part that gets wasted.

A cork that came out clean rarely goes back in clean. In at an angle, it ruins the bottle. You cannot lay it down. You cannot stand it in the fridge door. You cannot pick it up without a thumb over the top. So it sits on the counter, and by Thursday the wine is flat and slightly sour, and you pour it down the sink.

The plug is a short barrel with two flexible flanges. It goes into a standard neck the way a cork should. It comes out when you want it out.

It pours without ever coming out

Closed, the head is a smooth sealed cone. Twist it and the mouth opens. One side lifts into a broad dish, the other rolls down into a lip.

Tilt the bottle and the wine runs over that lip, spreads across the dish and drops into the glass. It thins out on the way, the way decanting does it, without the decanter and without the wait.

It settles the other thing about pouring red. Straight from the neck, a bottle finishes with a run down the outside, onto the label and then the cloth. A hard-edged lip cuts the stream where the edge stops.

Why not the flat rubber one

The stoppers sold in threes at the supermarket are a rubber disc on a plastic lever. They do one job.

To pour, you take it off, put it down, pour, find it again, push it back in. Every step is a chance to leave the bottle open. That is why half of them end up in the drawer.

Five, because one bottle is rarely the only one open

One stopper only ever sits on the bottle you used it on last. A red on the counter. A white in the fridge door. Something half finished on the rack from the weekend. The one stopper is on none of them, or you spend the evening moving it about and rinsing it out.

Five means every open bottle keeps its own. One lives in the fridge door and never moves. One goes to a friend's house in the bottle you took and stays there. Solve it once and you stop thinking about it.
